About This Tour

The 4-day Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek offers a deeply rewarding Himalayan journey that maximizes spectacular scenery over a condensed timeframe. Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from Pokhara to Kande, where the trail immediately climbs through the scenic Australian Camp and into dense, enchanting forests of oak and rhododendron, leading you to your first overnight stop at Forest Camp (2,600m). On the second day, the forest begins to thin as you ascend past Low Camp to the spectacular clearing of Badal Danda, eventually reaching High Camp (3,550m) where the tree line gives way to sweeping alpine pastures and crisp mountain air. Day three brings the ultimate highlight of the trek: a thrilling pre-dawn hike along a narrow, grassy ridge to the Mardi Himal Viewpoint (4,200m) or Base Camp (4,500m) to witness a spectacular sunrise over the towering peaks of the Annapurna sanctuary. After taking in the panoramic vistas, you will retrace your steps down the ridge to rest at a lower elevation like Low Camp. Your final day involves a steady descent through traditional Gurung settlements down to Siding Village, where a local jeep picks you up for the rugged but scenic drive back to the lakeside comforts of Pokhara.

Frequently Asked Questions

The trek is classified as moderate. While it doesn’t require advanced technical climbing skills, it is physically demanding because you ascend rapidly over a short period. You will walk 5 to 7 hours daily on steep, uneven stone stairs and narrow ridgelines. It is highly suitable for beginners, provided you have a decent level of basic cardiovascular fitness.

Yes, there is a risk. You climb from Pokhara (822m) to High Camp (3,550m) in just two days, and reach 4,200m–4,500m on day three. Because this 4-day itinerary accelerates the ascent, it is crucial to stay hydrated, walk at a slow and steady pace ("bistari, bistari"), and consider carrying Acetazolamide (Diamox) after consulting your doctor.

Yes. You strictly require two permits: the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the TIMS (Trekkers' Information Management Systems) Card. Additionally, under current Nepal tourism regulations, trekking independently without a licensed guide is prohibited in this region. You must hire an authorized guide for safety and navigation.

Accommodation consists of standard mountain teahouses (local lodges). Rooms are basic, generally twin-sharing with common bathrooms. Hot showers, Wi-Fi, and electronic charging are usually available but cost an extra fee ($2–$5 USD each). The food menu is surprisingly diverse, offering the traditional Dal Bhat (rice, lentils, and curry), pasta, noodles, eggs, and pancakes.

The absolute best windows are Autumn (September to November) and Spring (March to May). Autumn offers the crispest, clearest skies for unobstructed mountain views. Spring brings warmer temperatures and vibrant blooms of pink, red, and white rhododendron forests along the lower half of the trail. Winter is very cold with heavy snow potential, while Summer brings heavy monsoon rains and leeches.

Since it is a short trek, keep your pack light (ideally under 10–12 kg if carrying it yourself). Essential gear includes:
• Layered clothing: Moisture-wicking base layers, a warm fleece, and a down jacket for chilly nights at High Camp.
• Footwear: Broken-in trekking boots and high-quality hiking socks.
• Gear: A headlamp (essential for the pre-dawn sunrise hike), trekking poles, a 1-liter reusable water bottle with purification tablets, and a personal first-aid kit.

Yes, but you should not drink raw tap water. Teahouses sell boiled, filtered water for a small fee per liter, or you can buy bottled water (though plastic bottles are discouraged for environmental reasons). The most sustainable and cost-effective method is to fill your reusable bottle from local taps and treat it with water purification tablets or a UV purifier.
