About This Tour

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is a premier wilderness adventure in the Nepalese Himalayas that circles Mount Manaslu (8,163 meters), the eighth-highest peak in the world. This epic route showcases dramatic shifts in landscape, beginning in lush sub-tropical lowlands flanked by terraced rice fields, winding through dense pine and rhododendron forests, and ultimately ascending into an arid, high-altitude alpine wonderland heavily influenced by Tibetan Buddhist culture. Along the way, you walk alongside the raging Budhi Gandaki River, cross suspension bridges suspended over deep gorges, and stay in authentic, remote teahouses. The ultimate physical challenge and crown jewel of the trek is conquering the Larkya La Pass at 5,106 meters, where you are rewarded with jaw-dropping, panoramic views of Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, Kang Guru, and the massive Annapurna massif before dropping down into the Marsyangdi River valley.
Because this trek passes through a highly protected frontier bordering Tibet, the Government of Nepal classifies it as a restricted area. To preserve its pristine environment and fragile heritage, solo trekkers are strictly prohibited. You must travel with a minimum of two trekkers in your group and be accompanied by a licensed, registered Nepali guide. Furthermore, you are required to secure three separate permits before setting out: the Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (RAP), the Manaslu Conservation Area Project (MCAP) permit, and the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) permit. Given the demanding daily ascents and the thin air of the high Himalayas, this trek is graded as strenuous, requiring a high level of physical fitness, proper acclimatization, and a spirit of true adventure.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The government of Nepal classifies the Manaslu region as a restricted area. By law, you must have a minimum of two trekkers in your group and be accompanied by a licensed, registered Nepali guide.

You need three permits. The Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (RAP) costs USD 100 per week in autumn (Sept–Nov) and USD 75 per week in spring (Dec–Aug). You also need the Manaslu Conservation Area Project (MCAP) permit and the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) permit, which cost roughly USD 25–30 each.

It is graded as strenuous / hard. You will be walking for 6 to 9 hours daily over rocky terrain, steep stone staircases, and high-altitude moraine. Excellent physical conditioning, cardio endurance, and prior hiking experience are highly recommended.

You will stay in local teahouses (mountain lodges). Rooms are basic, typically featuring twin beds and shared bathrooms. As you go higher (especially in Dharamsala), the amenities become very primitive, and electricity or running water may be limited.

Tap or river water is not safe to drink directly. You should bring water purification tablets, a UV filter, or a squeeze filter. You can also purchase boiled, safe drinking water from teahouses for a small fee. Plastics water bottles are heavily discouraged to protect the environment.

The menus are surprisingly diverse but focus heavily on Dal Bhat (Nepali rice, lentil soup, and vegetable curry), which is the best option for sustained energy. You can also find noodles, fried rice, pasta, potatoes, eggs, porridge, and occasional Tibetan bread.

Connectivity is highly unstable. An Ncell or Nepal Telecom (NTC) SIM card may give you basic data network access in lower villages up to Namrung or Sama Gaon, but it cuts out entirely as you get closer to the pass. Some teahouses offer paid satellite Wi-Fi (like Everest Link or local cards) for a fee.

The golden rules are to walk slowly (pole, pole), stay well-hydrated by drinking 4–5 liters of water daily, and eat enough food. The 13-day itinerary includes a crucial acclimatization rest day in Sama Gaon (3,530 m) to let your body adjust before pushing past 4,000 meters.

If you suffer severe injury or severe altitude sickness, helicopter evacuation is the only rapid option from the high settlements. It is strictly mandatory that your travel insurance policy explicitly covers emergency mountain rescue and medical evacuation up to 6,000 meters.

The absolute best windows are Autumn (September to November) for crystal-clear skies and stable weather, and Spring (March to May) when the rhododendrons are blooming and the temperatures are slightly warmer. Winter brings heavy snow that closes the Larkya La pass, and summer brings heavy monsoon rains and landslides.
